Monday, 19 October 2009 06:10 Written by Helen Elfer Sea levels that are rising twice as fast as expected mean Shanghai could soon become Xia Hai if a solution is not found. In an Associated Press article posted today, Elaine Kurtenbach explains the threat to Shanghai’s future is more imminent than was previously anticipated, along with London, Miami and New York and other major cities across the world. She says: “Chinese cities are among the largest and most threatened. Their huge populations — the Yangtze River Delta region alone has about 80 million people — and their rapid growth into giant industrial, financial and shipping centers could mean massive losses from rising sea levels.” However, at present there is no one preparing adaptation plans for Shanghai, although engineers are working on reinforcing flood gates and levees. Instead Shanghai city planners continue to prepare for more mega skyscrapers and “billions of dollars worth of new infrastructure…right on the coast” Read the rest of the article here. What are your thoughts? Is this doomsaying or does Shanghai need to open its eyes to a fast-approaching catastrophe?
