Thursday, 22 October 2009 05:10 Written by Urbanatomy What has happened to this town? It seems Shanghai is turning American. First it was burgers, loads of them, big and small, now it seems the donut drive is the next wave. Maybe it's all in anticipation of the big man Obama coming next month, but it seems coronary-indcing good times are this season's new black. So donuts. What we got? Well, December 11 sees the arrival of Krispy Kreme. That's right. If you haven't had a Krispy Kreme donut before then you're a loser. A big time loser. It's one (okay, so there will be 16 different donuts in Shanghai's KK) of the many delights in life that you just have to experience. Like sex with an older woman, like a bungee jump... So the Wujiang Lu opening of Krispy Kreme is like the ultimate Christmas gift for us all. We must have been good boys and girls this year then. But Krispy Kreme isn't exactly the first donut store to hit Shanghai this year. Dunkin' Donuts hit, and hit hard. There are at least four of them in Shanghai, and 10 across China. But the plan is to open another 480 across the mainland (according to this report) in the next 10 years. That's a lot of bloody doughey goodness. But nothing in comparison to South Korea. On a recent trip to Seoul Urbanatomy noticed that it's official: South Korea has a donut and coffee problem. That, and the hottest looking people on the planet, but that's another article. According to Dunkin' Donuts headquarters they have over 700 stores already in South Korea. Alongside DD you've got the Aussie boys Donut King, Donuts Hut, Donut Statio... and the list gets longer. But who does the best donuts? You decide. hot tip right now: The Dunkin' Donuts Boston Kreme (RMB 6) - 240 calories of creamy, guey, doughy lovin'. And if you're worried about the calorie count, then hit this web site here, it'll tell you all you need to know about the calories of every donut there. Awesome.
